If a medical student diagnosed with depression, do think that could affect his future career as a doctor?

It will make him\her a better doctor ! Because any personal experience with illness urges you to expand your knowledge in the subject area. Therfore, you will be able to conquer it and become a betted doctor in the future for every  patient with a mental disorder. Depression is a change at the molecular level of neurons and other resident cells in the brain. So it needs time and effort to manage it. Nothing on earth will halt you from having a career in medicine unless you allow it & settle for less than you deserve. Good luck.

  1. Even in USA having a medical record of mental illness might reduce your chances of getting into various residency programs and medical schools in the first place.

    • Well, I agree that some medical schools and residency program providers require the disclosure of any previous or present medical/mental illness upon applying for a position. But this is mainly to offer help and to assess applicants’ eligibility for the very demanding study or residency training not to deliberately rate them down. I don’t think that they discriminate against mental illness !

They might also invite a candidate to a short interview or require a two years or so recovery period before starting training/ study. I do not think that the inquirer here referred to his/her competitiveness for positions unless you are that inquirer! In that case please do not be pessimistic and remember that this is part of depression.
      Good luck 🙂
